There are many reasons that people choose Costa Rica as an ideal retirement destination.  Proximity to the U.S., great climate, cost of living and the gorgeous scenery are just a few of the pluses to living in Costa Rica. Also, with the cost of living being lower than at home, many people find that they can enjoy a higher standard of living, with medical and dental services, and full time housekeeping services at a fraction of the cost.

Choosing to live the latter years of life in Costa Rica affords retirees the chance to adapt to a new-found tropical lifestyle yet with most of the conveniences they are used to from home.  Being so close to the US means that visitors are always welcome, and with new trade options opening, familiar products and services will be even more attainable.  There is a large foreign community in Costa Rica so retirees won’t feel totally isolated from familiar faces.

Foreign retirees in Costa Rica can gain Residency which is available in the following three categories:

Pensionado (retired): $600 a month is required from a permanent pension source or a retirement fund.

Rentista status: $1000/month for at least 5 years is required.

Inversionista status (investor status): Minimum investment of US$50,000 in a field such as tourism or export; $100,000 in a reforestation project; $200,000 in any other type of business.
